The Velvet Touch / Wurlybird @ The Jam

First Impressions

Good turnout, conversational mumbles at a dull roar. They serve food here now. Nice. The bathrooms aren’t very clean. Sound check takes a while. The bartender has a super awesome belt. Pint of IGA $5. Cost of Admission $5. Out: $10. Not too shabby. Glad I’m not in San Francisco anymore.

The Velvet Touch

Hell yeah. This bassist is funky and smooth and the dual guitars pair like mango lemonade. They’re either super compatible jamming musicians or they’ve done their fair share of rehearsal time. Johnny and Emma start singing… this is some high quality musicianship. Belongs on a record. CAN SOMEBODY GET THESE KIDS INTO A RECORDING STUDIO NOW Oh well maybe give em a few weeks. They’ll probably get even better.

The Dancers

It took a while for the gap to disappear or at least lessen…Still, not bad for an opener. The floor got just crowded enough to feel good and still have dancin room. Something tells me sardine-ery is on its way… this band is just too good. See them before they get too popular.

Bottom Line

Velvet Touch is a force to be reckoned with. They are already good and getting better.

WURLYBIRD

Amidst my dancing I kept watching the keyboardist wondering, "How does he do it? Must be part dolphin." Because one of his hands was steadily pumping out bass lines and the other hand was ripping out the organ solos. A lotta bit disco and a little bit funk. It makes sense that he was the front guy in the Talking Heads cover band, Naive Melodies.

The Dancers were goin at it, funkily. Freedom of human expression abounds in this town.

The Velvet Touch, I’m excited to see what’s in store for this new 5-piece. Their songs are tastefully catchy and danceable. Look out for their upcoming shows by liking them on the book:
